OP here.. My employers let me know that my job was ending due to the contract expiring. I was And am fine with that per the contract they honored it and paid 2 weeks additional pay but nothing more. I was blessed to get an offer Wednesday making more than I could think and I'm humbled. My MB has reached out to me and we talk, we never parted on bad terms nor was I terminated just needs changed and rather than renew a contract it was best to go separate as baby started school. Thanks all again

Here's the thing, PP. Some nannies don't really want to take a job, just to quit in a few weeks or months when the right job comes along.

OP, they fulfilled their end of the contract. No one is entitled to severance pay. You may feel you deserve a specific salary but reality is you are only worth what someone is willing to pay. If you are above a lower paying job till you get the salary you want and live pay check to pay check, good luck with that. Many of us have taken lesser jobs with lessor pay just to keep a roof over our head. You do what you need to do temporarily. 4 weeks notice is reasonable.

How many nannies have you cycled through? You're mighty defensive here.

What on earth are you talking about? If you file for unemployment you will be asked these questions and your employer will be asked these questions.

If the employer answers that you were terminated for cause then benefits can be denied.

I have no idea what the cause for ending the job was - maybe it was nothing. But maybe the OP was let go for some reason that would disqualify her from benefits.

I have no dog in the fight so nothing to be defensive about. I've just had some experience filing for benefits and also in seeing the claims that come in.

My former DC employer dragged me through months of fighting for unemployment.

What happened?

I'm hopeful that I may have something within the next week or two, if not I will just go back to work in the school.

If you truly live paycheck to paycheck and you've had a month to line something up, your situation is no one's fault but your own. I have had many points in my life were I am literally out of money days before I am getting paid next, there is no way I would not find ANY other job (even bartending/serving) if I knew my current position was ending. This wasn't a surprise, you just didn't prepare.

Sorry I'm not willing to take anything or any pay. I'm only looking for jobs in my field only working at McDonald's or waitressing is not worth the time because it's not going to pay anything. I have enough to cover me for what I need to do until I find something.

Make sure you make this attitude clear to the folks at the unemployment office.

Actually, last I knew, the first few weeks, OP would be within her rights to hold out for a job in the same field making similar pay. After that, she would have to be willing to take a pay cut (I think it's as low as 75% of previous pay, assuming that that would still be minimum wage or above) and look in a related field.
