I have a separate checking account where our AuPair is an authorized user with a visa card with her name on it tied to the checking account. I automatically deposit $400 into it on the first of the month, this is a standing deposit that goes in automatically. She leaves the receipts in an envelope for me. I can periodically check to make sure charges are correct. This works out very well because then I never have to worry about getting her money or paying her back.
Sometimes for a job well done, or if the kids are realy assholes one week I tell her to use the card to get her nails or toes done on me ( she's really into her nails).
Love the last part. How thoughtful!
It's the small things that keep people motivated and happy.

To the PP who had the money envelope stolen, how on earth did that happen? When I've worked with the envelope system, the envelope never left the house. If I had to run an errand, I took out the amount I guessed I'd need and left the remainder at home.
House manager position, handling over $5K for the household budget per month. I had money for rent, groceries and a few needed clothing items in the envelope, and someone grabbed the toddler with me. The choice was my purse or the child, and the parent had no issue with what happened.
FYI people that are paying a nanny to handle $5,000 worth of monthly household expenses don't pay their rent in cash from an envelope. Just thought you should know for making up stories.
Very few, I would agree, but the situation was what it was.Anonymous wrote:I'll tell you what I do.

I do a lot of driving and errands for the family since the kids are older and am really getting tired of having to use my money upfront to run these errands and then be reimbursed. I've talked to MB before about this and she was going to get a prepaid credit card, but it was too much work for her to register her and required too much personal information. So a few times (especially when she is out of town) she has purchased a prepaid gift card for me to use, but when I am going grocery shopping, or picking up takeout dinner for the family, the card runs out in a week or so, and then she never seems to remember to get another one. Sometimes she will give me cash beforehand, but a lot of times she won't give me enough to cover the errand, or ask me to do something while already out with the kids. I would say 75% of the time I end up charging these items to my credit card, which I don't like doing! It's not that I don't have the money (plenty saved) and I keep very good records, and am always reimbursed with my weekly check, but I just don't feel that I should have to use my money for their stuff! I really want to suggest that she get me a credit card that I could use for job related purchases, but I don't know how receptive she would be to that. Would that be out of line to request? What else can I do?
I would go with no longer carrying cash/your personal cards with you. Just tell her you are using a new budgeting system and are only carrying the cash YOU need for the day. She'll have to figure something out.
I've had jobs (not nannying) that required reimbursement years ago. A work related credit card has been the go-to for years now. There is no reason MB can't figure something out, it's just easier for her not to.
