I am a nanny who doesn't mind chatting it up for 15 minutes with the parents at the end of the day. I am on family number three that I am nannying for. The first MB I had, she gave off a vibe as soon as she walked in the door that was along the lines of "Get Out. Now."
When I first started with family number two, I at first was leaving as soon as they came home. But after a few days the MB asked me if I was unhappy with the job since I practically run out as soon as she comes in. That was music to my ears and kind of a shock after MB #1. With family #3, they also want to chat it up a little bit at the end of the day. And I love doing that. It is a great time to discuss developmental milestones, discipline, activities, schedules, adorable stuff the kids did, I wonder if little Johnny is coming down with a cold because I observed this and that, etc. etc.

She wants to go home on time! A nanny can love your kids to death, but at the end of what for many of us is a 12 hour day, she rightfully wants to leave, not chat another 20 minutes while your kids behave like helions trying to get your attention.

A 12-hour day is pretty typical for nannies? Wow, I hope you are all getting overtime. That is a lot of hours.

Of course we get overtime, but it isn't unusual for a nanny to work 10-12 hour days. Think about the type of people who employ nannies. Most of them are type A workaholics. They aren't working 8 hour days. So if the parents are working 9-10 hour days, nanny is working that + plus commute/traffic time. I work for a single mom who works 50 hour weeks, has some longer days, and sometimes has evening events. I adore her and her kid, but at the end of my shift I don't want to chit chat.

You know the scheduled work time for your nanny and you know if you keep saying talking after her quitting time that you are doing this, so, you must be horrified. Of course,your nanny should be ready to leave the minute you walk in the door and you should be ready to take over the minute you walk in the door.

It depends on when the end time is. I've had parents who budgeted an extra 15 minutes, that way they could change out of scrubs, get a few things done and then be ready to give their kids their undivided attention. Most parents seem to take the kids immediately so that they have to pay the nanny less, and that's what causes the issues.
