Ideally it would be someone in your geographic area and even better if the demands of the job are similar. Present yourselves as a share where the nanny will only ever care for one family at a time according to a set schedule. Setup vacation time to be split proportionally.

The other option is for OP to find a SAHM who would be willing to watch OP's kids with her own during the school year, and OP takes all the kids whenever she's not working.

DH is a teacher. We found an amazing nanny who does school year only. She has a master's degree and worked in education. Left to stay home with her kids. Went back when her kids were in middle and high school. Didn't love teaching as much, so looked to be a nanny. We hired her and are in our 6th year with her. She is my right hand and basically covers any mom jobs I don't get to with my job. She loves having school breaks and summers off to be with her kids (and picks up a few summer days to give my husband a break). She loves that she doesn't deal with all the red tape of teaching, teaches my kids every day, and has tons of flexibility to cover things with her kids. (My kids are regulars at the high school to drop off things her kids forgot with her.). Rare find, but they are out there!

Anonymous wrote:Nope. If you can't afford to pay a nanny for three months of the year or during school breaks then YOU CANNOT AFFORD A NANNY, PERIOD. Look into daycare or possibly a nearby SAHM with nothing better to do.

Hmm, I have yet to meet one of these creatures.

A PP brings up a good point about teachers needing to go back a week or so before the students--and if you are able to find such a nanny (with school age kids) you should let her bring the kids with her for that time.

But be prepared for her to bring her kids along when they are sick or have school closures that don't match with your school's closures. I would think that you would need to agree to pay the same, whether her kids are there or not, because the likelihood of finding someone who would want your schedule that doesn't have kids is extremely low.

If you are willing to have the nanny bring her kids in the mornings, you might have better luck as well.

Anonymous wrote:I don't get it: there is so much more childcare needed over the summer (and sometimes for higher pay) that just naving position for school year should be appealing to some folks. Is for moms of grade school children. There is a day care in my neighborhood that is run by an ex-teacher for teachers. Hours are great if you are a teacher (6 am -4 pm, closes for all school holidays) and horrible for other professions, and the daycare closes for the summer. So yes, I'd think it is possible to find someone interested. Not easy, but possible.

Problem is I already make more than most teachers as a nanny so a teacher is only looking for a really cheap nanny.
