I think it would be kinda strange if she showered w/out asking your permission, however if you consented then I would have no issue w/it.

By the way, how do you know how long she showers for? Just my curiosity peeking. Lol.

Is your hubby a neat freak? If so, then another person using his shower may just make him a bit squeamish.

Or if he truly thinks letting her shower is unfair, tell him if that is the only complaint he can think of regarding your nanny, then he has won the nanny lotto.

I mean, she must be doing an excellent job if she runs around the park with the kids. Why shouldn't she be allowed a shower?

My brother is a firefighter and he showers at work. Shouldn't a nanny have that right as well??

I let my nanny shower at our house. It allows her to leave directly from our house to an evening event. I consider it a perk that is easy to grant and generates good will.

This is sort of weird, I don't think I would make an issue of it though I can see why your husband would find it off-putting. Odd, but in the same category of things we all put up with when we have nannies- eating or drinking random things, leaving odd little messes, etc.

showers should take 5 mins, 1 min to dry off and 2 mins to get dressed again. then futz with your hair and makeup as long as you like, while watching over the kids.

That's how I'd frame it for your husband.

Honestly if she's showering there every day I think that is a little odd, definitely. But I would probably be ok with it also.

When my husband and I disagree about things like this (which happens once or twice a year) I remind him that he is not the one primarily managing the nanny, the kids' schedule, the workload, etc... If he wants to take that over and handle a search for a new nanny (if that happened) he is welcome to, but as long as it is primarily my responsibility then I get more say over things like this.

He is happy to defer to me on the day to day work so he understands deferring to me when we see relatively minor things differently.


I'm glad to know that I am not the only one who has had that conversation with my husband.

IS she asked a head of time and you said yes then it should be fine. If it's a live in position then yes it should be fine. But if she's not a live in and didn't ask then no it's not OK.

I never had issues with nannies taking a shower while kids are napping... If they got dirty with kids, for example. The only person who had an issue with this was my cleaning lady, as the nanny used guest bedroom shower (kids shower is too close to my son's room so the nanny would not wake him up) and she doesn't like to clean it extra time (though I told her not to bother with cleaning it until I tell her to).

In other professions where you get dirty there is usually a shower. Even in our office there is a shower "just in case"...

Providing childcare implies you are watching or monitoring the children. You aren't doing that if you are in the shower for 15-20 minutes each day.

If she gets messy she should just change her clothes (that she keeps at the house) like most other nannies. No one is taking a majority f their weekly showers at their boss' house or having their boss buy their depleted toiletries for them.

I think it's weird. Why can't she shower at the gym? Can she hear the kids if they wake up while she's in the shower?

But it's not a question of down time, that OP's point is that being abke to use this time efficiently improves her overall quality of life (and therefore job satisfaction) in a way that tv does not.

I think it's a bit over the top that she showers there every day. Personally I would find time to work out after work. My bosses lived in a very great apartment with an amazing Gym so even though I finished at 6:30 sometimes I would work out there and shower and go home. This is a give and take…if you really liked her just give her that as a perk and let it go.

Yes she does work early mornigs and I've tried tonexplain that to my husband. Also he doesn't mind at all what she does on her down time when they rest. He's even added her shows to our DVR list. And is all for her having a nap or just zoning out. So its not am issue of she should be working during that time. We know how hard a job she has.
