It was just a statement. I say stupid stuff all the time. Thankfully no one has posted my statements on dcum yet. I assume the nanny just wanted the girl to not get hurt. She said she can't because she was a girl only to get her to stop since the other kids were boys. Like when I tell my charge he can't slide down the pole until he is 7. She made a stupid statement that's it. No harm done.
this is exactly OP's point, it was an harmful statement. I say things to my girls too to prevent them from getting hurt on the playground, but I would never say that they cannot do something because they are girls. I actually tell them they can do anything and to never listen to people who say girls should not do this or that. you told your charge he cannot slide down until he is 7, which is ok since when he is 7 he will be able to do it. you did not tell him you cannot slide down the pole because you are a boy.

I don't understand this. Why would you tell your charge he has to wait until he's 7 rather than giving a concrete example (you may slide down the pole when I know you can hold on all the way down and can demonstrate that by doing xyz)? And how is it not harmful to tell a girl she can't do something, just because she's a girl?

Nanny here, who agrees completely with PP and OP. Girls get so many messages from media about sex, does this girl need a nanny also putting thoughts in her head about being ladylike and inferior to boys?

You don't sound like a nanny at all. But here's a REALITY CHECK for you. When you hire an unknown person to be the care provider, there's no way you can control these things.
What's ingrained is ingrained. You can keep fooling yourself otherwise, if you prefer.
I'm curious as to what part of my response makes you think I'm not a nanny. I have been a nanny for almost ten years now, and have worked with children in other capacities for even longer. I take pride in what I do.
As to your "point," of course this sort of belief is ingrained in a person from childhood. That is precisely why this post is such a concern. I am certain the parents do not want such thoughts in their children's inner monologues their whole lives. And yes, in a nanny/employer relationship, some issues will pop up which are not foreseeable. This is not necessarily one of them. However, it is important to interview carefully and hire someone who will assist the parents to instill the desired values in their children, and also to address issues such as this as they occur.
I also find it telling that the posts I flagged and asked Jeff to check were deleted.
How naive you are. Best to hire a person who shares your values if you care about values. It's not rocket science, my dear.
