Yes. She does deserve a merit increase.

Maybe you should have considered this before you decided to hire a nanny. There are many other lower cost childcare options that do not involve tying another persons finances directly to your own. My rent has gone up every year. As another poster pointed out, if she is unable to pay her bills comfortably she will be forced to move on, or if she feels she deserves more, she may choose to. Ditto. I was with a family for 4 years and received one raise. I was paid well so it didn't make a difference to me. They were generous when it came to stuff like vacation days and treated me very well.
