Do you buy your employer's children birthday and Christmas gifts every year? THAT is the difference and why it is ridiculous to compare your boss and your nanny's boss.

I am an MB and I do, of course, get my children's nanny a very nice birthday gift every year.

One year we got her a Costco membership. Year 2, we got her a necklace.

And for the millionth time, being a nanny is NOT like a corporate position and MB cannot be compared to your (MB's) boss. Your nanny will get your children birthday and Christmas gifts (which I doubt MB will be doing for her bosses children). That is why you always get your nanny birthday and Christmas gifts.

To OP - if you know your nanny well, a personal gift like a nice sweater or purse is great. Generally a bonus or gift card is standard.

Nanny here, my previous family have me a nice photo book of the charges and I and also received a tiffanys bracelet valued at $375. I received a $100 and card from my current family.

I have worked for 4 different families and all have given great gifts on my birthday! Some extravagant (coach purse, personal training sessions, spa gift cards) and some not so extravagant ($50 gift cards, etc). All have been appreciated an unnecessary but always made me feel so special and appreciated!

Yes, we do. Usually $100 gift card to Red Door or a store I know she likes. When in doubt, a Visa gift card

Yes, you should get your nanny a birthday gift as she has or will get your child a birthday gift. A framed photograph of nanny and your child or just your child and a gift card is nice. We got our nanny a cute picture frame with a photograph of DS in it with his arms reaching up for her and the picture frame said "I Love my Nanny". And a gift card.

I did get my au pair a birthday gift. I gave her a Hershey kiss diamond pendant and all of the kids put their kisses in the box it came in before we sang and cut cake. I did give a nanny a going away gift of a music box with an angel looking over a bassinet and had it engraved. I think I got it through things remembered.

If you don't know when your nanny's birthday is you have an illegal, off-the-books nanny.

Well I want going to chime in, but I will. I always give her a weeks cash bonus on her birthday and Christmas.

I didn't post previously but I am a nanny who has received monetary gifts like this for my bday. I was with the family for two years and they gave me a picture travel mug of my twin charges with $100 inside. Another family that I had been with for about 4 months sent me a $50 amazon gift card.

These were, of course, very generous gifts but nothing I would consider extravagant nor anything that I wouldn't spend on a birthday gift myself.

Just because you have not received gifts like this does not mean the rest of us are lying or sock puppeting when we say we have.

Suspect all you want. I don't give DCUM that much mental space, personally. I gave my nanny the above gift because I value her work and dedication to my family, and I wanted to express as much to her. She was thrilled with the gift. We are lucky to have her, and I want her to feel the same way about us.
