Actually, some employees are given a per diem over and above meals. About 15 years ago in my job, meals were charged to the company credit card up to a certain amount per day. (No alcohol) We were also given a $35 per diem.
OP, I guess that's what you were asking. I just didn't put it all together.
Work market is nothing like it was 15 years ago.
