If you are strapped and they are strapped why not just be honest with them? Tell them you have something lined up but happy to work for a couple of weeks to help stopgap while they keep searching. Win win. Why make this so complicated for everyone?

Just tell the truth, you are available for three weeks. I imagine they will take you starting ASAP.

Probably, why don't you just offer to babysit for them until they find a replacement? That way they know you are short term fill in help and you get paid in the meantime. I would charge them a daily babysitting rate $20 an hour. . They are desperate so they will likely take it for a few days.
