Their people that work full time and should be allowed a break like any other job, except they can't leave. How they use the break or little downtime is their business. You have to keep in mind that most nannies that are employed by people that work full time will have to work 10-13 hours a day. On my last job with an infant I only worked 9 hrs per day so I didn't really feel tired at all. But if I just needed to I only did it in his room while he was sleep and I was in the rocking chair and no longer than 15 minutes because I'd get groggy. However now I work 7:30-6:30 and have a half hour commute each way. I have older kids, my 3 yr old naps 2 hours, his 6 yr old sister doesn't nap anymore but mb tells me to make her stay in her room and entertain herself with quiet activities. Most of the resting time I'm cleaning up art and lunch messes, preparing my lunch, and then eating. By the time finished I may have 15-20 minutes I can just chill out. Then I bring her out to help with things and practice writing and math etc while I complete other chores.

THat is a very long day, esp with commuting. What are you going to do once more kids enter the picture or the child's naptime goes down to 1 or none?

I encourage my nanny to nap during the day. She takes care of another baby from 6:30-8:30 in the morning, and is with us from 9-6. That is a very long day. And when I go downstairs to get stuff from the kitchen while she's sleeping, I definitely make an effort to be quiet.

That said, I love our nanny, and I don't have any other complaints about her. Sounds like you might be less than thrilled with yours? Often that makes stuff seem annoying even when it wouldn't be annoying otherwise.

Laundry takes time to wash and dry. For me it is not a big deal if my child is happy, healthy, and secure.

I agree but would have no problem whatsoever with the nanny (above) who slept/rested on the child's floor after her chores are completed.

It seems to me that you need to remind her of her laundry duties. She should absolutely not be napping if she has work she is supposed to be doing.

I wouldn't tolerate her commenting on being woken up either. If she wants a quick nap AFTER all of her chores are done ok.. but commenting on the use of your own house is ridiculous.

I am a nanny and I make sure that everything I need to do is done - laundry and cooking for charge - and then I lie down on the floor of his bedroom for 20 minutes while he is still sleeping. I rarely fall asleep but really need to stretch out my back. Since I drink a quick protein shake when I am cooking for him, this 20 minutes is my only break in a 10 hour day. I do it whether MB is home working in her room or not and she knows I do it.

Sleeping on the living room couch is weird and lazy.

Most importantly, does what,it's of care suffer because she is tired and lacking in energy? That's a problem. And will be magnified when you have kid number 2 or 3 and sleeping on the job an hour or two will not be a perk.

Many nannies do. Ot nap during their 9-10 hour work day. It really only applies to one child households or when the kids are all in school.

I am a live in nanny and will take naps when the kids take naps. Their room is right next to mine and i can hear absolutely everything. as long as i get up when the kids are up, my employers do not mind me napping. Also i ensure all other chores are done before taking a nap.

I take a rest most days with my employer's permission but only when all my chores have been completed and for a reasonable amount of time. There is a guest room that I use so it doesn't affect the rest of the house. I also have the monitor with me so if my charge stirs or wakes up I am responsible for s/him. That's all going to change soon because there's a new baby coming and I'm fine with that. We have a wonderful mutual give and take relationship with each other.
