After a week of her being unable to wor because of feeling ill I asked if she might be pregnant and gave her another week to figure out what was going on and how she wanted to handle it. She got free prenatal care, including an ultrasound, through planned parenthood. At the end of the second week she opted to return home where she eventually had her baby. She is now a mother. I think if she'd have bit the bullet and worked through her morning sickness (as many people do) she could have continued to work through her pregnancy and she might have finished her year before I caught on. Who knows. Anyway she seems happy now.

I have never heard of any other au pairs becoming pregnant and deciding to keep the baby.

Our first AP got pregnant during her extension year. It was pretty traumatic for our family because she wanted to stay in the US to have the baby. We were morally opposed to this, but also morally opposed to turning her in to the agency and making her go home to her very poor home country against her will. Ultimately, she went home and is now a mom and seems happy with her life. If it happened again and the AP wanted to keep the baby, I would just make her go home right away and avoid the months of agonizing.

Short term life plans? You must be kidding.

Exactly. Having to shorten her year abroad should be the least of an APs concern.
