One of my charges (13; age range was 5-15 at the time) elected to take a paddling vs detention. I argued that detention would have more impact long-term: he would miss practice, benching him for the game the following day; it was the homecoming game, and the coach had a 2 minute policy for all eligible players for special games, so it would have been 1 of 4 guaranteed play days through the season; the coach tracked the boys that were ineligible for any reason through all of high school, and the kid with the best average eligibility at graduation got a special award; as a not-so-hot player on a small town team, he was guaranteed a spot on the team every year, but he wouldn’t be guaranteed time on the field.

His father and I understood why he wanted the 5 swats, because it would be easier. Guess what? In another situation, his father may have been okay with it (and I’m okay with working for someone who lets his child choose, rather than inflicting or allowing corporal punishment without the child choosing). We all make choices, and negative consequences hurt, the question is simply how.

Any bus I have been on, people have had to fold up their stroller. I can't imagine anyone being able to keep a double stroller open on a bus. Can someone who rides the bus a lot confirm this is even possible

This post is from 2015. It would be pretty bizarre to report the man at this point.

Having had to call CPS before - they ask a ton of questions. Not sure how you could report to CPS with info of "guy with double stroller". And unless the police were on the bus, again, not sure how you could report him.

I have a friend who uses a belt almost daily on her children and screams at them several times a day. It is not abuse and she is allowed to parent as she sees fit as does this man.

Had her caused a severe injury like pulled out a knife and stabbed his son yes call the police. But yelling and squeezing a wrist is just silly

What a jerk you are. And yes, this is abuse, period.

I have been a parent for more than 2,000 days (since my oldest child is six years old). I confess that I have screamed at her many times (probably less than one hundred out of the 2,000 days though), and that I can even recall one incident she made me so, so mad that I yanked her arm/wrist and pulled her away from something with more force than I should have.
What I am trying to say is that a one-off use of excessive force or losing one's temper at a young child, does happen in real life, and without more info on how often this happens, it's hard to tell.

It sounds more like the dad was frustrated and embarrassed this happened in a public place like a bus.

What do you want the eventual result to be?

If you call CPS and they find other issues, and eventually take the child away, do you really think the child is always better off at a foster home?

Hispanic guy, talks Spanish to the kids. They are on a bus with a stroller instead of comfortably in their car. I would guess they don't have much money and they might be recent immigrants or even illegal.

What do you think calling someone will really accomplish? I would say that it would only hurt this family. If the dad is found to be aggressive or hot tempered or impatient or something, but not totally abusive, will it help him if he has to pay for lawyers to fight the CPS system or if he spends time in jail? Some parents have many many faults. But their kids still love and prefer to be with their very faulty parents than with a stranger. Especially at the less than 6 years old age.

In the bus, you saw one interaction.
I would have a different response if you saw serious and repeated abuse next door, week in and week out, being committed. Especially if the abusing family is an American family who is fluent in the English language. They can properly and fairly make their point across against CPS. Plus they should have had the benefit of public education and should know better.

But so many of these recent Hispanic immigrants who speak their native language to their kids have barely finished elementary school and/or have fled conflict or real poverty stricken countries, they have gone through so much. Plus again, you saw one interaction.
