I'm sorry, but if I'm sick and can't get out of bed, there's nothing I can do about that. I would never take off for the sniffles, but for bronchitis, serious food poisoning, the flu, anything very contagious or which truly keeps me in bed, then of course I have to take a sick day. My charges are not my children. They are my employers' children, and their ultimate responsibility. And catching a contagious virus has no bearing on how good I am at my job. Going to work with that virus and infecting my charges and my bosses- that would make me a bad nanny.
Its being mindful when you are taking personal days appts etc. things that can be planned around and yes its your job so you do have responsibility if you want to stay employed. Yes you are right if you fall seriously ill and and other unexpected issues but these should be exception not norm.

I believe taking sick days does make you a bad nanny. I have held many office jobs and been a nanny for a long time and have never used a sick day.
Either you are blessed with a great immune system and should recognize that you are lucky, or you are spreading sickness in the workplace, to your charges and employers. If that's your arrangement and you and your boss are in agreement, that's fine for you. But it is not reasonable to expect others to live by that unusual standard. NY just passed a law that even minimum wage fast good employees are entitled to sick leave.
