It "sounds" as though you don't know what you're talking about. Nope never requested her staying here at all.. she decided to stay home, but when I gave her an option to stay at my house to ensure an on time start, I wanted to reach out to you kind folks on ideas of compensation. She is free to stay here or wherever she wants as long as she is here at 7am which is in her contract. Tomorrow we will discuss payment if she wants to stay in the future to avoid dangerous weather. I'm in DC and weather will be fine, so it's a non issue as of now.

My problem with this post, is that there appears to be no allowance for really inclement weather, like streets covered with ice. I guess she would be required to ski to your home by 7am, according to her contract.

I agree that she does not need to be paid if she is not on duty. However, it's a great gesture to give her a bonus for her dedication.

Our nanny doesn't like driving in the snow so would be happy to stay over with her bag if it were an option. Saves her two commutes too!
And no, we dont pay her an overnight rate. We feed her all meals and she is welcome to hang out with us or wherever in the house/guest room.
If she preferred to go home if she had other things to do, that is fine as long as she got in on time or a reasonable time (if truly bad out there). No one is taking advantage of anyone. And frankly I'd there was a pattern of wussing out every time there was a flake in the sky i would get fired and then she would have to be.

Is your spouse/significant other also a medical professional that can't watch your child?

Op, if you are located in MA or NYC areas than you must understand that the standard practice in DC is different. MA is in state of emergency with a driving restrictions on place. unless you're emergency personal you cannot be on the road tomorrow. Your nanny is doing you a huge favor because she could easily go home, stay in her bed and not come in tomorrow. She wouldn't be able to drive in anyways. So yes, her staying at your home so you can get to your job is a huge favor to you. She didn't chose to work in an emergency position, otherwise she would be a nurse making more money.
It would be right to pay her a flat rate for staying over night unless you specifically put it in her contract that this is part of her position. In which case her hourly rate should reflect it.

We never paid our nanny if she wanted to stay overnight due to potential snow or driving conditions. She is off the clock. She might have dinner for us, she works t in the basement gym, watches tv or reads her book. She does not work from 5pm until 8am the next day.

If she sleeps over because we're both traveling we pay the standard $100. This is two extra hrs of work (5-7pm) and anything should the child wake up during night or early (usually 7am wake up).

Works for us for 4 years.

Don't pay her anything, she isn't doing anything.

And now you probably have a good idea about how your nanny may be feeling about having to sleep at work instead of at her own house...

Exactly why I posted this and plan to compensate her! Did you read my OP? And sleeping on a hospital stretcher in a conference room with strangers is hardly comparable to our guest room with a queen bed, tv and private bathroom. Ideal? Not at all, but it's not a hospital.

Duh, you work at a hospital, she doesn't and I would rather sleep in my own bed in my home than somebody else's house.
