You really only need new seats for the older child. You can easily RF your old Britax for the toddler in less it is expired (yes, they do expire). I would pass down the old convertibles and get either the Securekid or Frontier 90 for the older child.
You don't have to take all the pointers. Remember her way of doing things, will probably work great for her, when she is with your kids and your way will work best when you are with her kids. I would be open to trying and learning new things, but you do not have to take all her advice (except on car seats) as facts.
If you are using one seat in multiple cars, do get the new britax click tight. It makes for a very easy and quick install. But, for a harnessed booster, I'd get one for each car and if you need to, go cheaper with the Securekid (we have several of the harnessed boosters and this is my favorite).
