You could have responded, "I certainly appreciate that you are going to guarantee my hours while away, which was our agreement, and I am certainly willing to do a few kid related tasks while you are away, but I will not be able to spend time with your puppy as pet care is not a service that I offer and it is not a part of our agreement.

Nothing about the dog, since he's not even here yet.

"I'm sorry, but my job is to care for your children, not your dog. If you would like to add dog sitting on to my required duties, I would be happy to discuss my pet sitting fee with you."

You were already told how to decline.

And you agreed to pay dog sitter.

All this from an after school non 40 hour position.

How would you deny this request? I am being paid for 2 weeks while they are out of the country. Also, not sure if it makes a difference, but it's an afterschool position so I would pick the dog up at 3 and drop off before 7 (these are my normal hours) and only 2 days the first week and 3 the second week due to being off for the holidays.

Yes I agree that what they're doing now is mean. They were initially trying to pawn the puppy off on OP for 2 weeks. Basically trying avoid paying for a dig sitter or kennel stay, despite it being a grossly inappropriate request of someone whom you employ to care for your children.

I don't even know if it's cheap - if they're taking the dog to a kennel, having her take the dog every day doesn't save any money I can't imagine, it just adds to her suffering. It's just mean.

They aren't making her she has agreed to do this, and she shouldn't be surprised when she's expected to be the dog sitter every time the family is out of town.

I can't believe they're making you do that. Totally unreasonable request and way above and beyond your job duties.
