We don't bank hours or pay but we do pay a retainer amount for bonus vacation weeks our nanny gets. So she gets her two weeks vacation at her current full pay, then once our or her total vacations for the year go over two weeks we pay her $500 a week retainer. She has many other perks too, which were added as annual raises over the last four years.

You should decide what number of hours is reasonable and acceptable and present that to your MB. If you would typically bank one or two in a week then that is a good standard. You can offer to do child related tasks during their vacation if they want to use some of that time. However, doing so means those days do not count as your pto.

I bank hrs all the time and have never had a problem. The only thing I have worried about in the past is potentially owing my bosses money at the end of are working relationship. It's one thing if they owe me money but I'd rather not owe hundreds or thousands back. Thankfully it has not been an issue and the hrs all seem to even there way out every few months.

You are not wrong, but you put yourself in a very bad spot by agreeing to this.


I honestly don't see how your MB or any reasonable adult would think this is ok.

My advice to you would be to get your feelers out for a new job in case you need it.

Since you are coming up on a year I would wait to renegotiate your agreement then for no banking of hours.

Employers can't legally bank hours, whether you work in childcare, retail, food service, or as a car mechanic. It's illegal.

Nannies who have guaranteed hours have employers smart enough to understand that demanding nanny "make up" hours the employer chose not to use is a good way to lose a nanny.
