I was curious to know how much we should pay our nanny who is currently taking care of our two toddlers, and soon we will also have a newborn in the family. What is a reasonable rate for NW DC for 3 kids? She does not drive, and the pay if off the books. Please advise!

You are despicable for paying off the books. You are stealing from someone who is desperate. I hope you get caught.

Stealing what from whom?

Stealing social security benefits from nanny by paying off books.

I'd rather take my $25 an hour now than be left with with like $17/hr after taxes

Actually, if someone is paying off the books I'd imagine you'd could pay less per hour because that is all take home. If you are paying legally, then when you pay that amount, some is taken in taxes so nanny isn't getting as much take home. I am not a nanny, but when I am offered a job, I know that the amount I'm offered is "gross pay" and I think about what that would mean once taxes are taken out, I pay to commute, etc. and I negotiate accordingly. So you can pay less if you are paying off the books.

We'd like to pay on the books, and that's one of the reasons why I wanted to get a sense of what others are paying. Unfortunately, we would have to switch nannies to do so... It seems that 22-25 per hour, where they pay their own taxes, is a reasonable rate. Did get it about right?

Basically. It's on the high side, but not over market. You will get many good candidates at this rate. If you really like someone, go high. If you have someone with less experience, don't go over $22/hr.

I think your decision to pay on or off books is personal, you did not ask how anyone felt about it so I will just speak to your question. I make $22 for two babies. It would be a stretch for me to take the same or the off books equivalent for an additional child. HOWEVER you have to assess your individual situation - how much experience? Is she doing housekeeping? Do you need her to work late/overnight/holidays/? Are your kids high needs? Make list of variables and whether they are more vs less demanding on your nanny. Then you can see the overall picture and decide whether your offer is fair.

Of course she has a choice. Thus far she's chosen the illegal route, now she's trying to correct. Your heaping on is pointless.

I "ho poo e" you find something better to do with your time.
