OP here - thank you for all the input and concern. I was able to reschedule my appointment for tomorrow morning at 7:30 am. I'm not thrilled with the idea of getting up so early on a Sunday, but at least I will be able to go in. I do wish my employers would be more flexible and understanding though.

I disagree. Yearly Check ups are needed, even for adults. That's how my thyroid issue was discovered. How do you wanna catch diseases early while they're easily treatable when you don't see a Dr? How will you work and you get seriously ill that could have been prevented by getting a check up?
I'm with Kaiser and all preventive care is free. I think it's important to stay on top of your health.

And it sounds like OP has an issue for which she needs to see a dr. Being told there might be something wrong is scary and I would want that checked is soon as possible.
I try to be as courteous as I can with my bosses when I need to see a dr, but I'm not willing to compromise my health for them. And they totally agree with that as they always let me see a dr and tell me they want me to be healthy.

You're not very smart if you went 5 years without seeing a doctor or dentist. Not smart if you don't know how to negotiate benefits every professional nanny should get. Just because you bend over backwards for your employers and likely let them take advantage of you does not make you professional.

I agree. Being a Martyr and never taking a sick day or seeing the doctor or dentist does not make you professional. It makes you look like you can't stand up for yourself and don't put your own needs first. Everyone should be going in for at least yearly check ups.

Your health should be your first concern. I would not cancel. You were a fool to go in sick.

If your Dr. needs to schedule an ulrasound because she sees something, then you cannot put this off.

Perhaps you can have her write a note to show your bosses that this is important so that they can understand the importance of this needing to be done.

I encourage you to get this done sooner rather than later.

Is it possible to schedule your appointment early in the morning? I usually start work around 8-8:30, but when I needed an ultrasound I scheduled it for 6 AM. I'm not sure if that's an option for you, but even if I scheduled it for 7 or 8 my MB only would have had to miss a few hours of work in the morning instead of a whole day.

I would try to reschedule the appointment for 2+ weeks from now. Inform your MB that you will be taking a personal day to get some appointments out of the way. She can be mad if she wants, but she has plenty of time to figure something else out for your DC.

If she really makes a huge huff over it I would start looking for another job. God forbid something major happens, and you aren't able to work for a week or two. Sometimes you just have to look out for yourself and not think of inconveniencing your employer. In my case, I could have had cancer, so sorry MB, but I'm going to get that figured out!

Allowing an employer to walk all over you isn't professional or respectful. Sometimes life happens despite your job.

Talk to your MB. One of the nice things about working for a SAHM is their ability to be flexible. I have always accommodated my nanny's appointments. She just found a lump in her breast and I told her to take the first available ultrasound appointment. She also gets sick days and we pay for her health insurance.

It is fine to use your PTO. But if you told me today that you needed Monday off I would not be happy. Not because you don't get to use your PTO but because I need notice so I can plan for it. 2 weeks is ideal. 1 week is minimum unless it is an emergency. If it the latter yes I would expect to know what the emergency is.

I'm an MB and I don't understand why this is so all or nothing. If you have vacation, sick, or personal leave as part of your contract then you simply arrange to take a scheduled day, or partial day, off.

If an employer is rational enough to include benefits such as holidays and personal leave in a contract then he/she clearly expects those days to be used.

Just tell your employers that you need to take a few hours off. Maybe you can get an early morning or late day appointment and it will be as simple as a parent taking a couple of hours of vacation leave.

If you cannot discuss these things with your employer then you have larger problems than when to get your ultrasound. Don't assume that just because the stress of a sick day brought out some ungraciousness that they are/will be unreasonable about a matter like this.
