Never give cash as a gift. Yes, cash is a good bonus, but a really crass gift. If you really don't know what to get here, a gift card is a little better.
For a nanny of only four months, I would do something in the $50 range. You still don't know if she is a great nanny. If she is with you for over a year, give something more substantial.

I suggest cash unless you know what she likes. The amount should reflect your own means and relationship. If you got a really good gift but just don't have the means to match it then she probably knows and won't even think anything of it. If you can afford a more substantial gift then I say go ahead and do it. Such a thoughtful nanny deserves it.

You don't have to actually be grateful but you have to act gracious and you definitely can NOT say anything. I'm actually the OP of the thread and ended up giving our nanny a $100 gift card plus 2 picture frames and my parents got her a gift as well. So obviously I feel like your NF should be more generous but if you say anything it will not be well received. I think you are the OP of the thread about a raise for a new baby right? It doesn't sound like they are a great family to work for so if you decided to move on no one would blame you but you absolutely cannot say anything about wanting a better birthday gift.
