Regardless of what job you're starting you get paid on the day you start and from then forward, not for any time before you start.

this! MB here... I have hired at my job and been hired the day after a holiday and you don't get a holiday BEFORE your first day!

If the only reason that you started on Tuesday rather than Monday was because of the holiday, then yes, I would expect to be paid for it. However it isn't really that big of a deal, just be explicit with them about what your start date is, and that Labor Day IS a paid holiday, so that you do get paid for it at the end of this contract.

Right. If her start date was Tuesday, she doesn't get paid for time before she was hired. It would be very unprofessional and kind of strange for a nanny to expect to be paid for days before her start date. Luckily, OP seems to realize this.

Nanny here. I would expect to be paid if I would have worked but for the holiday. However, I feel that this is a confusing situation so would not assume my employer intended to undercut me if they did not pay.

I think it depends on the reason you started that Tuesday, OP. Did they ask you to start that week, because that is the first week they needed care? Then they should pay for Monday. But if you were committed on another job for the previous week and they had to wait for you to start until that week, then it would be reasonable for them not to pay, as it wasn't their preference that you start the day after a holiday and they may feel resentful of having to pay you for a holiday where you weren't yet on their payroll for your own reasons.

Hi all, this is the OP and I am actually the nanny in question. I posted the question to make it sound like it was from the employer's perspective because I wanted to get replies from other employers. I didn't get paid for Monday, and I kind of felt that was the right thing to do since I didn't officially start until Tuesday and it would have been odd to request being paid for Monday. Thanks for everyone's replies though. I would have loved to been paid for the extra day, but want to make sure to start things off on the right foot!
