I think the job officially will not start until Sept. 1st or around there...As soon as they return after Labor Day from their trip.

You were probably paid in cash for the trial period because at the time you were not an actual employee yet since it was a trial work period and both sides were deciding if it was a good fit or not.

Now since it is mutually agreed upon that it is a good fit, then your job will begin when they return.

I highly doubt they will pay you for that week since you are so new and if you ask them for a week's pay so soon, do not be surprised if you find yourself already on the chopping block.

What I do not understand is why there is confusion on your end regarding this....Didn't you & the family discuss this whole thing after accepting the job?

In order for this gig to work out in the long term, I cannot stress enough how important OPEN communication is. Bar none.

This makes no sense. You worked a 2 week trial. You were paid for that time. Why didn't you ask when the job would start?
Also: you wouldn't have taken the trial work? That's dumb. It's still work you're being paid for. Did you give your other job zero notice?

You should of course be paid for the trial hours you worked. And you were paid for that from what you said. You signed a contract starting 9/1 and will be paid after that. I'm sorry it's disappointing you wont work and won't be paid for the week in between, and maybe they could have been more forthright that they didn't need you for that week, but that's how it is. You can't expect pay for that week.
