Why does this have to continually be said? It is NOT the same. At your job, is there only one person who knows where the cameras are? Is there only one person allowed to review the footage? Are there no protocols for viewing the footage and what actions are taken if something isn't right? If it is learned that someone is being inappropriate with the cameras, are you comfortable in knowing that said person will be severely punished? A nanny being secretly filmed by her employer has none of these protections. Her employer could put a camera anywhere, and she wouldn't know. They could do whatever they like with the footage, and she will likely never know. They could misconstrue the footage, and fire her without warning or reason. And finally even if she does find out about inappropriate use of the cameras, the justice process would be long, expensive, and even with the best of outcomes, still leaves HER the victim out of a job. Don't secretly tape your nanny. It's messed up.
Yes, there are only certain people who review the footage and yes there are hidden or barely detectable cameras everywhere. If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to worry about. Why are you so insecure?
I'm going to say this one more time, very slowly and simply, try to listen. The problem with a SECRET nanny cam is not what you may catch me doing (though that is awkward given I'm not typing at a computer), the problem is that there is no oversight. No one is there to make sure YOU aren't doing anything inappropriate. There are cameras everywhere, but there are laws that govern their use. How can I be sure those laws are being followed in your home? I can't be and that's why if I find one, I will quit, after I've searched the place up and down for any others.
First of all, I'm an MB who has a nanny cam but I agree with you that secret nanny cams are a bad idea. I always disclose to any nanny candidate during an interview that we have the cameras. They are obvious and not hidden. While to some degree trust needs to be earned on both ends have hidden cameras completely breaks any trust that might develop. With that said though, I don't really understand the argument that the parents might do something inappropriate with them. What could they possibly do with video of you playing with their children. Assuming you aren't taking your clothes off in the middle of their kitchen (which you really shouldn't do, cameras or not) what kind of footage could they have that they would do something inappropriate with? Obviously if they have cameras in the bathroom that is a different story but if they are really such shady people you would think there would be other signs you shouldn't work for them.
Anonymous wrote:Although I am fine with cameras that my employers tell me about I just do not trust someone who would secretly tape me. I would consider it a reflection of their regard for human dignity in general, not just a desire to protect children. Disclosing the camera will turn away any perverts who want to harm kids. A lazy nanny who plans to watch tv all day will go elsewhere. Choosing not to disclose it just gives them a special show at my expense.
Does anyone have recommendations for a camera detector? I just came across an iPhone app and have found several models under $100. Would love to know about other peoples experience before I buy.

What makes you think there is oversight in other workplaces regarding cameras? The laws governing the use of cameras and footage are the SAME, whether you're a nanny or another worker. The risks are the same.
You are not special.
Go ahead and quit your job. Try and get a job in the wider world. You won't be any more protected than you are now. In fact, you'll likely be worse off since most workplaces don't automatically disclose cameras.
Fool.

Why would you need to know that if you are ok with not knowing where they are?
