I work 9-5, at 5, I am walking to my car.

I usually stay between 10 to 20 mins. I work with an infant so the parents like to hear about what we did that day, where we went, sleeping, eating, or if anything was unusual. I also jot about our day in a notebook for them so that way nothing is forgotten. Once or twice I have stayed about an hour over because we were talking about new things to try activities wise or routine wise. I have also known DB for over 15 year because he was my former high school teacher and recruited me to nanny when he heard that is what I did at a high school reunion. So sometimes there is news about the school or classmates of mine that we get caught up talking about.

nanny should talk about the day and leave or write a journal and leave parents are tired too and want privacy

In the last few nanny positions I've had the parents always tell the kids that it's time to walk me to the door and say bye. It's perfect because then I know they are ready for me to leave yet it's in a polite way and it teaches the children good manners. OP, tell your nanny you want to start working on manners with the kids more. Think of at least one other new policy you want to start in regards to manners and ask your nanny to help you.

This is what we do too.

For her to stay a WHOLE hour after he end time is really quite weird!! As a parent, I would not only be annoyed by that, I would be also weirded out by it as well. Strange.

As a nanny, I don't want to just bolt out the door after the parent comes home. That would look bad...Like I cannot wait to leave and go home. Like I hated my job and cannot wait to get away. By the same token, staying too long would look like I was so attached to their child, I had a tough time saying "Good-bye" which would seem weird to the parent because it would look like I had attachment issues. I usually let the parent come in, maybe use the restroom (if the child is very young!), and we discuss the day. I work nine hour days, so we discuss what was eaten, how long the naps were, where we went, what we did, and of course any cute stories that I want to share. This usually takes about 10 minutes tops. Then I wave "Bye-Bye" until next time.

If your nanny is staying too long, just kindly say, "Okay...Well...Thank you very much and I appreciate everything and we will see ya next time! Come on little Sally...Let's say Bye bye to Miss Nancy!!"

Now if your nanny does not get THAT message, she most certainly is crazy!!

Depending on how chatty MB or DB are feeling, it can be anywhere from 5-10 mins. I'm there for 10 hours with two hormonal teens so I am ready to go at the end of my shift!
I'm thinking, if her commute is far, maybe she stays until 6 to avoid the rush hour traffic at 5pm? My leave time is 6:30 but sometimes parents get home early like 5ish, and traffic is much worse. However that is not a reason for her to infringe upon you guys, I always bear the traffic or run some errands nearby!

I feel like a little chat is warranted and I certainly don't want to chase her out the door but I am glad to see that this is a bit odd as I was wondering if I was just being a bit mean. I for one run out the door of work as soon as I can!

10 minutes if we are talking about the kids, may be 10 more if we make a little small talk.

Op, I reccomend you tell your nanny, "OK, you're done now. I can take it from here." That is strange for her to not pick up on cues.

I leave immediately. Even with families I have had very friendly relationships with I rarely stayed more than 5 minutes. When I did it was a special occasion. If mom or dad arrives before 6pm I wait to be told I'm not needed (in case they need to shower or run an errand).

Maybe 3 mins! My employers always walk me out and wave from the front porch, very sweet.

Why are you allowing her to stay 5 hours after her shift ends? I'm a night nanny and as soon as my shift is over I'm out of there because I need to sleep. You need to be firm and tell her she needs to go home.
What is she doing during this time? Is she getting paid?

That is so weird! I try to leave as soon as possible once my MB gets home. haha

Odd that this is the opposite of a recent post where the nanny continually arrived early because she needed the money and her MB paid her for the extra time.
