Yes she can and the cretins she is working for will be in a boatload of trouble with local labor office and IRS, which they deserve. People who pay illegally should go prosecuted, convicted, and serve significant time.

I think you should let your MB know what you know and call her out on it.
Ask her if it is true and if so, what are her reasons for doing so. Do you feel that she is justified??

So basically, they told you the truth that their family needs were changing. Big deal. They don't need you anymore.
Start looking for a job now and take a good offer and leave them behind.
Or, wait until they fire you, collect severance and maybe unemployment, and look for a new job.
Either way, you need a new job. Stop making yourself sick over it. This happens every day. Deal with it and start searching.
Yes they told her the truth but when she said that she can't have cut hours, they told her that they would work it out...in reality..they've just been searching to replace her when it works for them instead of being honest with her upfront.
