I am quite surprised that you already have booked a sitter for the evening, yet you have not even discussed a rate w/her yet. This is a huge no-no on your part. Next time, make sure you both agree on a rate before you set something up.

Anyway OP, it doesn't matter if your child will be awake or asleep. Understand that your sitter will still be 100% responsible for your child and that she will be on duty and not allowed to leave your home so she must be paid the same amount hourly that you would pay her if she was sitting for you in any other situation. It is completely unfair to expect to cut her rate down just because your child will be asleep. Responsibility is responsibility....No exceptions!!

If she is young, say 16-18, then yes, $10/Hr would be fair. Adding some $$ to order dinner would be a nice extra on top too!

For anyone older, I would start at $12-13 + up.

Of course. But, if both of you forgot to discuss pay then wouldn't it make sense for MB to follow up to clarify? I set my own rates and would not compromise because a family was being cheap but I don't take it personal that some people can not afford my rates. If OP and the nanny both failed to address this critical issue then MB had better make sure her sitter isn't expecting $35 and hour when she can only afford $20!

I tip the girl in the tight t-shirt at Hooters less than the woman at Vidalia, yes. Her tip is based on the prices of the food, which are based on the type of establishment it is, and therefore the expectations for service. When the Hooters girl has enough experience that Vidalia will hire her, I'll tip her more there, too.
