Dang. I just posted one of these posts yesterday and didn't specify any of those things but only because I have never hired a nanny before and had no idea they were even 'things'. I just know I want to provide a good package and to pay my nanny legally. I kind of assumed that would be the starting point for anyone posting here….

There is no "going rate."

Legal or Off-The-Books?

College graduate or not?

What kind of previous experience and for how long?

Every single time anyone asks what the going rate for a nanny is in any particular area, the same argument starts between the people who will hire an undocumented immigrant for $10 an hour and those who want a legal, college graduate with experience for $25 an hour.

Please just state what you want upfront.

The problem is they want the legal college grad for $10 an hour, they don't want to list specifics because they just want someone to justify that $10 an hour is OK and then they can just apply that to everyone in their mind.

Oh sued
I find it hard to even get parents to pay 10 per hr. I have a college degree and years of experience. I went on an interview a while ago. They wanted to pay less then 2 per hr once I did the math. The mom got so upset when I said my rate was 10 per hr.

I've seen that a lot with these women who totally underestimate childcare. I've seen people say they have two kids but only want to pay like its one, because their 4 year old "is pretty independent and doesn't need much, you can just focus on the baby." Like a 4 year old will just stay out of the way all day and not need love, attention, meals, help, etc...

It's pretty ridiculous.

Oh yes!

Anonymous wrote:YES! Please simply state what you are looking for so we can stop reading the same fricking argument about rate over and over and over again. If you want to hire an illegal to clean your house and keep an eye on your kids - don't ask for the "going rate for a nanny". And certainly don't think that your income or money problems affect the rate of any employee!

This.

Exactly! And learn the difference between a sitter and a nanny.

Ok, then....tell us. Seems almost the same to me.

Aside from a few outliers, the range for nannies in DC is $13-20 per hour when the nanny works for one family and $18-22 per hour when the nanny works in a share. Yes, there are exceptions. I personally don't doubt the posters on here who claim to make $25 per hour. I just think they are the rare, rare exceptions in DC.

That said, the nannies on here who claim that you can't get an experienced, educated, professional nanny without paying $25 per hour are just out of touch with reality and doing a great disservice to well-intentioned new parents who come here looking for guidance. The idea that you must choose between an illegal for $10 or a pro for $25 is just silly, and the nanny gallery on here knows it.

Thanks for being so reasonable and accurate.

Exactly. It's an illegal, but mostly ignored slave-trade of the Western world.

That's incredibly insulting to actual slaves. Slaves don't get paid even 1 cent. They don't get to go home to their families at night in their own homes. They are basically prisoners who are physically hurt on a whim. If you don't want to work for $10/hr which is more than $2 OVER minimum wage then don't take the job but don't be the idiot who says that's like being a slave.

So you think there are actual slaves reading this message board and getting their feelings hurt?

Hello. Actual slave here. Yes we do read these forums. Feelings currently very hurt.

Would it be possible to get a permanent post on the topic? Really just a list of the most important considerations that will help other poster advise someone on salary? I would think things like location, hours, major duties, years of experience, education/training, and benefits.
