Okay, I'm clearly missing something here... What would parents hope to learn with a tracking devise on a nanny's phone or car? Do parents actually think their nannies are taking their kids to bad neighborhoods to buy drugs or going to male strip clubs? I honestly don't get it - we go to the park, school, piano lesson, soccer practice - nothing exotic or remotely interesting!

What about when you are not working - will they still be able to track your location?

My soon-to-be employers (job has been offered, contract signed) want me to install an spp like "Find my iPhone" or "find my friends" so that they can track my phone via the GPS that the app uses. I'm assuming they want to know where I am at all times when I am working and caring for their child. I'm sure they would say they wouldn't track me during my off hours, but what would stop then?

My boss put a tracking devise on my car. It's against the law but I didn't sue, I just quit. I found out about the devise when one of the family friends told me about it.

No, they said through an app like Find My iPhone.

They also have cameras & the dad will be home some days and I've told them I'll be using an app that I can update and they can see the stream of updates live. Tracking my phone isn't something I'm comfortable with...

They clearly don't trust you. How long have you been together?

That's the sad part - I haven't even started with them yet.

Tracking my phone was never mentioned during any (3) of our interviews, nor is it mentioned in the contract.

I understand the parents wanting to protect their child and being nervous having a nanny. But trust is SO important in order to form a great, long lasting relationship. I'm feeling very discouraged right now, and am definitely questioning my decision to accept the position with a family I thought was going to be wonderful and even my "dream job/family". Ugh.

I am confused. They want to track your location of your phone use? What do they hope to learn? If they provided the phone and paid the bill thn maybe because I would continue to use my personal phone for personal calls and texts and I see no reason to hide my location.

They want to track my location. Nothing to do with calls or texts.

In that case, acknowledge their concern and that you do provide references and a clean background check to establish your trustworthiness. Be sure to state "I do not do tracking of any kind." Make it clear as day, no room for ambiguity here.

Also, I would not put a lot of energy into arguing about it. If they feel very strongly then they need to find someone else. Do not quit though, let them make the decision. You can not file for unemployment while you search for another job if you quit.

Hope she finds it and sues your ass. And retires.

I don't think I would feel comfortable having that app on my personal phone - I'm not sure why but it feels creepy - but if they wanted to give me a phone just for use when I was caring for their children, I wouldn't have a problem with it. I would leave the phone at their home when I left and pick it up again when I arrived.

Good luck OP.

Excellent advice. Btw, did they give you any references for themselves? I'm not sure I would trust these people if I were you. You probably have no idea about their possible criminal history or ethical behaviors, or lack of.

No references for them - I would be their first nanny or sitter of any kind. They are "higher class" I guess you could say, and if they did have any criminal background they wouldn't be in the profession they're in. I did Google and research to confirm their identities/professions though.

If they want a tracking phone they can pay for a separate phone for your use during nanny hours only. Suggest that!

Why did you feel the need to do this? Sounds like a terrible invasion of privacy.

It would be if it were a real post. It's a troll post. Don't take the bait.

OP, just say no and if they have a problem with it, move on.

My employers tried to trick me into doing this, by asking me to download a nanny log app that had gps tracking. No thanks!!! I don't need you knowing where I am in my free time. If I could disable it for when I'm off duty fine, but I couldn't so EFF NO!!!

You may need to reconsider this job, OP. Red flags like this tend to lead to nowhere good.

Why are you confused? Does someone track your every move 50 hours a week? Somehow I doubt it.

Nope, I am confused about their motivations for doing so. If you read my post you might have noticed I asked OP about it. No one antagonized OP so I suggest you stop crying wolf little girl.

Confused about their motivations? Really? How naive of you. Here's a hint: they don't trust her. Simple. Now grow up.
