They should, however, be paying you the IRS rate for mileage and wear/tear on your vehicle - which you should be documenting. And, IMO, they should pay to have your car detailed periodically.

I view this as a job duty and yes patch or mileage but having a car that fits the needs of the job was a key hiring requirement. PP's family sounds like it is the same for them. On the temporary line - why in the world would they chip in on a car for someone who might decide to find another job one month later?
