Celebrating the nanny's birthday or anyone's else's is for the children's benefit. The kids need to have an opportunity to enjoy the act of giving and learn what that's all about.

I don't accept birthday gifts from the parents and I don't plan to give them a gift on their birthday either. But something is seriously wrong if the mom and dad don't give the child an opportunity to either make a nice card or pick out a cupcake, or buy some kind of present for the nanny. This is part of socialization and manners.

Likewise, I would hope that any nanny will help the kids make a card or gift, bake some cookies for their parents' birthdays, mother's day, holidays.

So yes, a cupcake and a card is perfectly appropriate, as is any number of other gifts but it should be from the kids to the nanny. Otherwise you have missed the value of this giving opportunity.

I agree with this post. "Begin as you mean to continue..." A good relationship with your new nanny is more important than the cost of a fifty dollar gift/gift certificate.

You are hilarious, posting a combination of entitlement and threat. Pay up or your nanny will treat you badly. Remember, it won't be cheap. Nanny has been there a whole month and requires $50 gift cards to her favorite places.
