New poster here. I am also curious about why some people don't like to use time outs, and what other alternatives are preferred. The two examples above sound great, but both sound like narrowly-tailored forms of time out to me. Am I missing a critical difference? What do others do? OP, how does your nanny like to handle toddler behavioral issues?

I'm a nanny who doesn't use time outs. I redirect the behavior or ignore it. The only time I take away toys or separate a child from the environment is when safety is an issue.

I am the PP who offered alternative time out methods. In my experience, traditional time outs are somewhat ineffective. The child spends the time upset and screaming, when instead the time can be used to explain what was done wrong and give them the opportunity to choose a different action. Children are capable of understanding more than many people think. Personally, I would rather educate them on their actions than punish them.
