Next time just order pizza. If I forget food, I just order delivery when I can't stop to pick something up. While I think it's strange he flipped out, I understand food boundaries. Growing up poor, it was taught to never eat someone else's food unless offered. They may not be poor but it's something I respect. I have a feeling he stressed the issue to prove a point and make sure you didn't do it again. They want clear boundaries. They probably will never warm up to you and always treat you like a typical employee. If you have issue with that, I would move on.

I can't believe people are defending this asshole. OP, run, don't walk, away from this job. This family thinks you are below them. Good enough to wipe their kid's butt, but not to eat their food. I had an MB who had a seperate plate cup and silverware for me, like some kind of slave girl. GET OUT NOW.

I bet they were bent out of shape by the lie of omission rather than the food being eaten.

You WERE sneaking something, though, and it was not from the food they specifically pointed out that you could eat. Who cares what it was, you took something without asking and then neglected to tell them you took it. Basic rules to being a decent human being state that if someone in your home gets hungry, YOU LET THEM EAT. Your back peddling (you can have water...or is it juice and tea?) and defensive attitude are great indicators of your maturity level.

Fixed that for you. She ate a sandwich. Not lobster tails and a bottle of their finest wine. Some of you MBs have more money than common sense and decency.

There were snacks and beverages provided for her to eat, she chose to help herself to something else (and then basically lied by omission). It has nothing to do with what was eaten. She wasn't going to starve, she just didn't feel like eating the provided snacks...huge difference.

It is a matter of principle. When you take something that belongs to someone else, you let them know instead of waiting to see if they notice that you did it.

If you had only gold him on Friday you may have avoided some of this mess. By not telling the family that you were eating their food you look like you were being sneaky. DB has every right to address the fact that you took something without permission and didn't tell them about it until DB brought it up. You've only been there for 2 months so you should be more careful while you are building trust with the family.

I would quit. It was just one sandwich you made one time BC you forgot your food. It was very nasty of him to make a big deal about it. You're caring for his child/children, he should be happy to treat you to a soda etc every so often! If this is how he reacts over a lunch imagine what's next...I would run. You deserve nice employers who treat you well!

And either way that is no way to treat someone you invite into your home and indicates they would probably not treat you well in other situations.

+1 I would definitely quit.

I'm supposed to bring my own meals but now and again I forget something or need a burst of caffeine at naptime and drink a soda or make a sandwich. My family has always been fine with it, i always tell them before I leave. It is weird that they'd be that hostile over a one time thing. I wouldn't want to work for them..

As soon as the second boss tells you something that conflicts with the first, you immediately need to say "MB told me Blah. Is that changing now, or did you two want to talk it over and get back to me...? I just want to be sure I'm doing the right thing by both of you."
