Doubtful she will get it since she was only employed a week and fired for cause.

You can claim unemployment if you have had employment continuously for a set amount of months, that does not have to be with the same employer. You are eligible to claim if you are fired after 3 days.
The family can contest the unemployment claim, but I doubt they will be successful. For a firing without a chance to remedy you can claim. It is the dept of labor that decides who can claim, not the family.

Maybe she has a good reason for arriving at work 20 minutes late? Like an accident on the road etc.

But anyway, since the mom didn't pay her on time, this nanny is not losing anything. Time to move on and find a better family

OP, stop being so defensive. You screwed up. You haven't even told us why you were late. She was right to fire you. If you were excellent otherwise and truly just had the bad fortune of being really sick, she would have kept you. Being sick, being late, and being full of excuses and defensiveness is all of what got you fired.

If it makes you feel better, obviously she should pay you on time, so it sounds like she's screwed up a bit too. But seriously Op, drop the excuses act. If someone acted like it wasn't a big deal that they were 20 mins late because they didn't value whatever I had planned to do that day, that would really piss me off.

+1 from a nanny

An MB here. My nanny is behaving in a similar fashion right now. I am getting ready to fire her. Not by the text message though.

OP - whether your MB is at home or not and regardless of what her plans were you have to be there for the hours you agreed on. As simple as that

I've been a nanny for 12 years. I have never been late ever. I am always at least 10 minutes early. And in the last 12 years I have taken 1 sick day and it was with a family that I had worked with for 4 years.

"Excuses are the nails I used to build my house of failure"

I think firing you was the right choice. Hopefully you can learn from this.

Being sick and having to go home early during the first week on a new job is a big deal, altho I know things happen. But to ALSO be 20 minutes late your first week? That does not make you look very responsible, and I understand why she let you go.

I'm a nanny. I would have fired you the day you were 20 minutes late.

You can't expect to keep a job when you show up 20 minutes late in your first week. I don't care if your boss was home or not.
