I think this is a bit different because you have to wear clothes on the job. You don't have to have your expensive caseless iPad on a shelf in the playroom next to something the kids are jumping on. Similarly though, I probably wouldn't wear my favorite or expensive anything to watch kids all day.

Yes I am. If my children broke something belonging to our nanny, I would pay or at least offer to split.

Why wasn't in a case? They make cases for iPads that can protect them if they are dropped or fall to the floor. If you are going to bring it around kids a case is essential.

I don't think I would have even told themI had the ipad at work.But then I'm too cheap to buy one in the first place since they are so expensive and I couldn't afford to buy it twice. Plus they're big and cumbersome. And if I did get one, guarantee it would be nowhere near a child. I won't even let them touch my phone or nook.

This is a fine example of the entitled attitude people complain about on the board. Everyone agrees that this was the nanny's fault but she came on here wondering if she could get her bosses to replace it simply because they can afford to. Just because they have more money than you, doesn't mean you are entitled to it.

Under these circumstances, I would be embarrassed to ask my employers to cover some or all of the cost. This accident was completely preventable by you and has nothing to do with your charges.

If your charges had taken the iPad off the shelf and broke it, yes that is different. But this is totally on you. Sorry. Also, depending on the age of your charges, I wouldn't bring anything expensive near them. I got an iPad Air for Xmas and my child hasn't been anywhere near it because if he broke it, I don't think I could stomach spending that much money to have it fixed.

You can't expect them to pay. It would be extremly nice if they did but it shouldn't be expected! Trust me.. They didn't forget.. If they don't pay for it then it's because they're either A) Cheap or B) don't believe it's their responsibility.

As an employer, if you're going to require that I replace or repair everything you bring to work, would I be remiss in requesting that you only bring what you need for the job?

Why did you have it at work at all? And if you brought it for nap time or something to entertain yourself, then leave it in your bag until you need it. You brought this for yourself and then brought it into the kid's playroom and left it in a shelf. Sorry, OP - this one is on you.

I agree that if it was your glasses or something like that, your Mb should offer to help. Or if you left it in your bag and a kid went into your bag and broke it. But I see no way in which this was at all your employer's fault or why they were even told about it.
