Did you have a job on the books before this? I'm asking because Unemployment is based off of the last 15 months (5 quarters) of your work history, with the most recent 3 months usually not counting when determining how much you will receive. If you didn't have another job on the books before this your weekly amount will likely be less. Check out the umemployment website in your state.

OP, you still haven't answered the question everyone has been asking, why did you ask for a pay increase after only 8 months, especially if what you are getting is an average salary where you live? I'm not saying you don't deserve more but you agreed to this rate when you took the job so why didn't you wait until closer to a year to try to renegotiate?

It's a turn-off when you ask for a raise after less than a year at a job unless there has been a significant increase in job responsibilities.

OP, I think it was a bit premature to ask for a raise after only eight months. I am not too clear on how much you were being paid..If you felt like you were being grossly overpaid, then you had every right to ask for more. For instance, if you agreed to work for say, minimum wage, then proved yourself a great nanny by coming into work on time every day, not calling in sick and going above and beyond your duties, etc. then yes, I think a raise would be warranted.

But if you were already making a good salary for your area, then decided you wanted more "just because" then your family might have felt like you were being greedy.

Again, I would need more details of your situation.

Regardless, I am sorry this has happened, esp. right before the holidays.
