This is fair. My employers give a certain percentage of their bonus. They said that they couldn't do their jobs so well, if they had to worry about their children.

So if they don't get a bonus, neither do you?

It really depends on the overall compensation package, don't you think?

I'm a very part-time morning nanny and received $50 in a card and $25 movie gift card for birthday. I have only ever had 1 family give a week's pay for a holiday bonus so not the norm for me to assume it's typical. I never felt resentful or anything though because I get plenty of paid time off, and have extremely laid back and down to earth employers so I think the way they regularly treat you factors into how you'll feel.

This is true. They would also rather start at $17 and get yearly raises than start at $20 and get none. Saves me money, so whatevs.

I was given two weeks pay as a bonus last year after only being with the family since the previous August. Very much appreciated. I am still with the family. My other jobs always gave a week's pay plus some gift.

Not OP but this common term refers to not only nannies, but housekeepers, gardeners, etc. it is help for the household. No need to get bent out of shape.

It is also condescending.

Exactly. Condescending and outdated. Nanny, housekeeper, or gardener would do just fine. "The help" has classist and dehumanizing connotations, and I know that you are smart enough to realize why it would be offensive today.

PP didn't say " the help". The term used was "household help," which is an aggregate term. Google it and you will find agencies who use that term to describe the professional services that are provided in the home.

+1 The butthurt is strong here.

My favorite job always gave me a full month's pay for a year end bonus. I was there eight years.

No, the amount should be prorated. For example, she has worked six months, give her half a week.

Like all the topics on here it depends on how long you plan to keep her, how happy you are with her so far, how feasible that is for you financially, and lots of other variables. If you gave her less than a full week she would almost certainly assume it was because she hadn't been with your family for very long, but if you love her and hope this is a long-term partnership then I'd say give her what you'd want to give had she been there a full year.

Personally I never expect a bonus when I haven't been with a family more than 6 months, but I have (to date) always received a full week. Wouldn't have held it against them if I didn't, though.
