Any of the nannies on here saying that they should be able to text/FB/Tweet while they are at the playground since they take such good care of the children at home should not be working as nannies. When you leave the home, you have less control over your environment and it takes seconds for a child to move quickly, fall and break something. Do it while the kids are asleep if they are still napping. Nothing is so important you need to answer on the spot. Besides, if the parents don't text/etc in front of their kids, you shouldnt either. Did it ever occur that some parents are trying to teach their kids not to be rude and actually pay attention to others?

I would take age into account here.

Usually younger girls are more attached to their phones. I see women in their 20's w/these newer phones practically glued to their hips. They constantly need to be checking their e-mails, Facebook accounts, etc. They also need to be available to any and every one.

Many older women were not raised relying so much on technology and are not as competent w/all the new gadgets so I would hire an older nanny.

Whoever you hire however, simply let her know that while making personal calls on the job is okay, let her know that you prefer if she keeps her calls in moderation during awake hours and save the longer conversations for nap times.

From my personal experience, it's usually younger women who are more attached to their cellular phones than older ones. It's a generational thing, I suppose. Older women weren't raised depending on their phones so much as younger women were.

So it makes sense that a 20-something will be on her phone a lot. What 20-something doesn't check her Facebook/Twitter, etc. every fifteen minutes.

I am 23 and I would be lying if I said I didn't. I do. So do all of my nanny friends.

My mother is 44 and she sometimes has her phone on her and sometimes doesn't. She could care less.

If you see a nanny who is engaged in a manner that you want for your children, talk to her! If I clicked with you and was offered a better package than I currently receive with long term job stability, I'd take the new job!

I am on my phone during the day and my employer doesn't mind at all! She appreciates that I respond to get text/calls. In my contract it says I can't have longer than 15 min convos while the kids are up. I don't use my phone when we are at the playground because I am tere to have fun. Ill use my phone if we are watching the favourite Jake an the Pirates episode for the umpteenth time or when the kids are playing independently.
My charges love me and so do my employers so I know that using my cellphone doesn't effect my work performance!


On a side note would t talking in the phone be more of a positive thing than texting. You have yor eyes on the kids and are able to watch them while you are talking. If I'm on a phone call at the park (rare) its usually to a mom friend so we are both multi tasking at the same time!

The problem with constant phone use such as texting is that even if it is short the kids know you are distracted. Honestly I cn see the need for this break at playground if tr kids do not nap and parents do not want to require them to rest in rooms. Otherwise I do not see why nannies need to be texting or calling while the kids are up except for very infrequently. And that means like 2 to 3 times for 5 min max in work day except for nap time.

...except it's already been said multiple times that the older nannies are on their phones just as much. They're talking on the phones vs texting.
