PP here. My employers did not set a low limit, so if you trust your nanny I don't think that is necessary. I had to charge something to the card for $2k a couple of weeks ago.


For a charge that big I would call them with my own card. I have a separate account for the nanny to use with a $2K limit (it's my account but she is an authorized user). It's just like wearing your seatbelt - you hope you never need the safety measure, but when you do, you really need it! I am not willing to put my nanny on my card, which has a limit higher than she makes in a year (and it's not because she is underpaid).

That is very unusual. Most parents would handle tuition themselves.

Mine did this as well. Prepaid visa is a good idea too.

I don't want to put things on my credit card because it isn't paid off every month, so any purchases I make I also have to pay interest on them. That's okay when it's my stuff I'm buying, but I don't want to owe interest on my boss' grocery bill, you know? I will spot them in a bind, of COURSE, like if we run out of milk unexpectedly or there's a toy we've been eyeing that pops up on sale at the store, but typically I am provided with cash to use on their son's behalf.

I find a prepaid card or money envelope also alleviates the need to ask for reimbursement for petty purchases that, if I put on my credit/debit card, and I would feel silly asking for reimbursement for. Ex: charge and I go to the coffee chop and she gets a $3/4 treat. I put it on my card and 9 times out of 10, do not ask for reimbursement (or even remember to bring it up). In my experience, these little things tend to add up and by the end of the week, I have spent $10/15 on my charges, not a ton of money, but more than should come out of my pocket. When petty cash or some type of nanny charge card is left, these situations are easily avoided and nanny isn't left feeling like he/she spends an unreasonable amount of their own money on their charges.

I think OP unfortunately isn't always in the position to pay for these things upfront. I can relate to that, and it can be embarrassing to approach the parents with that. If she had the cash or a pre paid visa card upfront it would eliminate not only that issue, but also just save everyone the time of dealing with the reimbursement.

I'm surprised to hear I'm the only nanny who uses her own credit card for purchases. My while nanny career I've just given my bosses receipts and they reimburse me for what I've spent. I've never had a boss not reimburse me and don't see what all the fuss is about.
