OP here-- we realize she needs to either get a ride to the Metro or live somewhere closer. If we lived in a house, I would have no problem having her stay with us, but we are in an apartment that is simply not big enough. We hired a local nanny and had a bad experience, and old nanny wanted to come back, so we are giving it a try.

I used to commute from Laurel to Bethesda in a car. In rush house it was 1 hour each way. I was a nanny and it was not worth it to me.
I also moved from Laurel because I hated it.
Has she ever been to Laurel?

THEN take nomurs number of buses depending on where youn live in Bethsda. I am a nannyh who livse in northern Brutionsville.very closet to Laurel. I drive.but like to take public transportation when I can. I will not drive or us public transportation to Bethesda WAY to far of a trip.

How long does it take, including the wait times for the buses?

I am the previous poster. Give me the addresses or street name in each place. It will be > 2 hours each way. There is just no way to go from Laurel to Bethesda without a stop first in Silver Spring or Wheaton. It is like two sides of a triangle and there is just no way to do it with public transport that isn't at least 2 hours each way. You can do the figuring yourself on the WMATA site.

If yes, it will be hard for her to understand how dependent people here are on their vehicles until she gets here, and then she will be very unhappy. If by "she does not drive" you mean she doesn't have a license, I would suggest you subsidize housing in Bethesda. If she has a license but no vehicle, help her purchase one. If both of these options are cost-prohibitive, hire a local nanny and transition your "love affair" nanny to a friend you hang out with when you visit each other's city.

I totally agree with all of this.

You realize a lot of Laurel is quite rural and open. This is even assuming she lives within a short walk to the bus stop. There may not be a bus stop within a 30 minute walk! What will she do in the winter or extreme heat? I'm very interested in why she can't just get a car?
