I'm a little confused. If the extra gas costs for the longer commute was the only thing that was discouraging you, then asking for the 56.5 cents per mile rate (or whatever it is) should cover that just fine. I would not think of that as upping your actual rate at all. Is it the longer commute that makes you feel that the position is then no longer something you are interested in? Then that is a totally different issue. I can see why you would feel an increase in pay would then help you feel better about it, but honestly, that should have been the first thing you looked at with this position if it was THAT important to you to have a shorter commute. I see that they would be agreeing to do the mileage rate for vehicle expenses which is totally fair of them, but I think you are trying to just talk yourself out of a position that could be good and with a fair family all for something that you really should have considered more in the first place and shouldn't be causing you to backpedal with your decision like you are.

OP here, thanks pp. I absolutely tried not to act entitled. I offered to pay for additional membership services if they needed more time but they said they bought a 1 year membership. I didn't mention the rate not being worth it to me as I did here, but that after going over the gas costs, I felt like it would be too much for them to ask for more gas money and also pay me on the books. Parent said she would have renegotiated gas costs if asked but that she understands if I feel like it's not the right position for me. I am positive that they will not ask to increase any rate as I never mentioned an increase in rate, and if they did, I would still decline the position.

MB here. I understand what happened - I'm currently myself in a job that is a lot farther commute than I thought it would be. It happens. But unfortunately, I would be pretty shocked if after we agreed, you came back and asked for a 25% higher rate than we agreed to. I don't understand if you're only asking for the higher rate or also more gas costs? If its just the rate and you maturely explained your position the very next day and you were a strong candidate, I would meet you half-way. I wouldn't do a negative review just for this though if you handled it nicely and didn't act entitled or like your commute was my problem. They're probably testing you out for babysitting to see if they think you'll be worth that much of an increase. Be mature and be your best self and then make sure you continue to be worth it if they do come up.
