yes, i think they are.
but i got a trickster that fooled me into thinking she would stay the whole year, when all along she probably knew she was going to leave early.
that's fine, thou...i can't stand her and can't wait for departure day.
So sorry OP. we had one of these as well. She left two weeks ago and I couldn't be happier. So glad to have her lazy behind our of my house!!!!!

AP has a return ticket. They buy a return ticket where they can decide when to fly back home. To trap them into the host family by saying they will owe money or not gat a paid flight home is illegal.
It depends on the family. I know someone who wanted to be fluent in French and went to France as an au pair, just to become more familiar with the language before studying it in college. The family was not nice and after a few months decided it was not worth it for her to stay. She does well now, but cannot hire a nanny without wondering what they think of her

dont forget that APs pay a pretty significant sum to be in the program -- at least $800 plus.
And they are taking the chance that they will get a psycho American family.
