Also factor in that if the Nanny is married or living with family- she is more likely to accept less- however a single Nanny without the extra support or income will expect a decent FAIR and livable wage.

Also add that the agencies base their rates on American nannies who are legal citizens, speak fluent English and have a minimum of a high school diploma. Most American nannies have some college and can typically provide benefits to your kids that foreigners can;t- like assist with homework, tutor, read, drive- etc. People hiring Nannies tend to forget that like everything else in life, the cost of something either depends on the area- or what additional benefits you are getting that up the price. You shouldn't compare what illegals or foreign nannies that can't speak great English will take as rates off the books with the rates expected of a nanny that can give you more.

Rates are only inflated if they are not in sync with local agency rates or the cost of living in the area- its no surprise Nannies in NYC are paid higher rates then in pobuck West Virginia so lets not get it confused. There are standard market rates which are usually determined by the average demand by the majority of the nannies in the area or by what the agencies are charging. I know for a fact in 2011 the starting rates for a live-out Nanny in the NOVA area began at $15 for 1 child according to local agencies like White House and North Star Nannies and went up from there depending on additional children, demands and duties, experience, qualifications, etc. In 2013 I would assume that rate is either still relevant or just gone up with the cost of living. Remember that $15 an hour for 40 hours per week would be a yearly salary of $31,200 which depending on the experience is fair for 1 child but definitely not the median or high end- this is also excluding taxes or benefits which also affect the package.

For a share parents typically save per child and the nanny benefits because she can make $25 an hour by charging less for each child separately- which in this case would be $12.50 per child or $12.50 an hr per family which is lower than the stated $15 per child per hour. Its a win-win but Nanny shares are never less than $20 an hour minimum off the books- if the situation is different expect that she will want $20 take home at least.

OP here. Again, thanks for all of you that gave actual information. For the rest of you that just get on here to flame, inflate rates, whatever, can you please take it somewhere else. You are really inconveniencing the rest of us and wasting our time. And for those of you who posted about her being inexperienced, don't you think having two sons of her own counts as experience? That's the only reason I hired her.

$12-14? I'm guessing the best qualified nannies didn't even look twice at your ad. I wouldn't consider anything below $18!

There are several candidates who do ask for the higher rate but every time we have responded politely that we are only offering $12-$14 most have come back and said that they would lower their rates. Oddly, the ones that moved on, which is fine, were not the most qualified.

Just need to speak out against this ongoing claim of inflating rates - I don't think we are. I report the rates either I am paid or I would have been paid at that point in my life (at a certain age, before getting a degree, with X years experience, etc.). I have no doubt OP could find a nanny for $8/hr but that probably isn't what she's looking for

OP its anywhere between $14-$20, $7-$10 per family. Agree that nannies here inflate rates terribly. Your rate also depends on # of hours and location. If the job is more hours and in the suburbs you are in the $14-$15 an hour average (not base) for a share. If you're near a metro and do not need a nanny who drives you are also in the $14-$15 range.

Seems to me that doing childcare all day should be a pretty important job, at least in the eyes of that child's parents. But it doesn't sound like that here.

I pay $15/hour, we live in NOVA. My child is 13 months old and she is live out. She is over 49 so quite experienced. We pay taxes and everything. Sometimes i think 15 is not much, but she does nto do anything all day, just child care.
