Are we talking about a baby that's in a crib? Or a toddler in a bed? I play with my older child outside while my younger one is napping. Sometimes I have the monitor, sometimes not.

I think the red flag is that the nanny did not think to bring the monitor outside with her. Is her judgment good otherwise, OP?

Agreed.

This. I am mb. I take my toddler out in the back while my 9 month old is taking an afternoon nap (that is always at least 2 hours long). We will go outside in the backyard for 20 minutes or so with the monitor. I would tell nanny she has to have monitor and obviously she should stay on property.

What if the child started choking or was getting smothered, etc.. I wouldn't do it so it's scary that many 'professionals' would.

What on earth would your child be choking on or being smothered with?? And how would being outside versus downstairs/in the kitchen/playing in another room lessen this risk (if it exists)?

I'm wondering about the smothering comment as well. The only thing I can think of assuming the family and nanny practice safe sleep is aspirating spit-up (which is extremely rare). Back-sleeping babies with nothing in the crib don't have anything to get smothered by.

I agree as a mother, I left my kids in the house sleeping while I did things outside, checking on them periodically. But as a nanny I have to be more professional with my charges. It's different.

If the naps aren't lining up, or if the other kid is taking a very long nap, it doesn't seem fair to keep them inside and quiet because of the napper. I think that would be a good way to encourage sibling rivalry and resentment...i can't go play because my stupid brother is sleeping. Btdt as a kid and it sucks.

I've had older kids go into the baby's room and purposefully wake her up when this happened in the past.

She should have checked with you, but I think it's fine if she brings a monitor outside. Up to you though. Your children.
