Sure it is. It's a benefit, like any other, and is considered in the compensation package offered to a nanny.

It is a benefit to the family, never to the nanny. Living with your boss is never beneficial to a nanny.

Parents love knowing you are right there.

My boss is like a mom to me and the pay is not bad, I would stay with her for as long as she needs me.

I was a live in for five years and I loved it. It worked well for me. I don't nanny anymore because of a MS diagnosis a year ago, but would probably still be doing it if not for that. I loved getting to know the families and I was "part of the family" nanny. It is really important to find the right fit and constantly communicate with each other.

Great way to save money, yes. Will I ever do it again, no!

Then there is no need for them to hire a live-in nanny! There are many nannies that will come in really early and/or stay really late. Usually there is a reason they want someone to live-in, and that is always more to their benefit than to the nanny.

Since I always still maintain my own place, a live-in job pays my regular rates, if not more. It's a convience for the employers. PIA for the nanny.

I am living in the basement apt of a family that needs 30 hrs a month. I work full time for others. Our works well for me and when they don't need me anymore I'll look for something similar. I think this situation can work well for the right personality. You need someone whose pretty laid back and not entitled like a lot of people on here. Might be a good fit for someone a little older who doesn't party, bring strange men home a lot, and has no interest in home ownership.

OP here again -- thank you for all of your responses. If we go this route, our nanny will have her own apartment -- own entrance, own kitchen, own living room and own separate bedroom.

I will say that the only reason we'd consider doing this is to save money on child care costs by using the place to live as part of the compensation. So, it sounds like that might not be the best fit for a lot of nannies.

I am a "rule follower" so I think our potential nanny would be safe from "could you just watch the kids for 15 mins?" with us.

I agree. Being a nanny is a draining profession but being a live-in is even harder. I never felt like I had time to recoup since I was living in.

This is what I hate about being a live-in nanny, your employer could fire you for any little thing. They could just wake up 1 day and decide they don't like you and you're out of a job AND a place . It's also VERY uncomfortable when you give notice .
