Subject: This is why nannies get bitter
Care.com ad today offering a whopping $850/MONTH to care for a newborn 8 - 9 hours a day, 5 days a week. They'd up the pay to $950/MONTH if you also did grocery shopping, ran errands, and did housework.
It's not just that new parents are clueless, it's that care.com doesn't HELP clue them in. Care does NOT mandate minimum wage, they allow parents to offer $5 - $10/hour.[b] And care also offers a badly worded check box system for nannies to use that allows us to "ask" to be paid legally.
I'm no IT expert, but hard freaking hard could it be to do the following:
1) When parents want to post a job, the first thing they see from care after a basic registration page is care's "babysitter rate calculator" - there's a clue for the clueless right there - rates in your area are $12/hour? Don't post a $2/hour job!
2) When you post your job, you have to read and choose what pay option you will offer. Illegal pay will be called just that, and a warning will be included about IRS laws, FLSA laws, etc.
3) There is NO OPTION to choose wages below federal minimum. To cover care's a$$ on occasional work or true babysitter jobs, offer a "negotiable market rate" ticky box.
4) Allow caregivers to "review" families that offer illegal wages or refuse to pay legally. Nothing long needed, just more ticky boxes.

But she states that she's looking for either a nanny or a home daycare. I don't think that $5 an hour is illegal in home daycare. Maybe too low or unethical, but not illegal since providers usually watch 3 or 4 kids.

Why should they pay you much of anything to "watch" their kid?

I love how many MBs are trying to act like its a typo. Shall we post all of the ads with a similar typo? She listed the range at $5-$15/hour so that she doesn't eliminate herself from searches. I don't think there is a $0-$5/hour option, but that's what she'd like to pay as she said herself.

I see these types of ads and have even spoken to these types of parents and honest to God....It still amazes me how low people think of us childcare providers. Believe me, sometimes these ads make me so angry I just want to call these pathetic families out. How dare they put their child's safety in jeopardy by offering such paltry pay? Someone who wants to abuse/molest children would most likely apply for these positions. Not a business~minded educated nanny who knows her worth.

She either wants a private nanny to come to her home and provide one~on~one attention to her child OR drop her child off at someone's house and still pay the same rate. Absurd!!

Yes but the ad also said $5-$15/hr. So obviously there was a typo somewhere because even at $5/hr that's much more than $100/week. I'm not saying there aren't ridiculously cheap people out there but I think everyone needs to call down a little about this particular ad. Clearly she didn't mean $100/week or she wouldn't have added $5-$15/hr.
Nah, she meant 100/wk. Parents always put one rate down and state another in the summary.

Even if it is accurate, why would that make you bitter? it makes me marvel at how clueless this MB must be and feel sorry that she has such a long ways to go before she realizes how out of wack her offer is (assuming it is not a typo). but ignore it - it is obviously not even w/in the realm of reasonable and no other MB on here would argue it's fine - so why focus on it?
