If it is the nanny car, it IS your mess, OP, and you and the boys should keep in clean. So, yes, along with the majority of posters, I think this is your responsibility.

OP, I've driven around a nanny care before too, and it was always a mess from the kids. I think what OP means by 'nanny car' is that it's probably the 'family car', but she uses it while on duty.
Meaning, the kids trash it with the parents too. I really don't think the OP is trashing the car and letting the kids trash it, and not cleaning up after herself and the kids. I think she's annoyed and pissed because the kids have made it a mess in GENERAL and now she needs to get on her hands and knees and clean the FAMILY CAR.

Career nanny here. I drive the family car when at work, and I would never think of allowing the children to leave their trash in the car. Are you the only person who drives the car? I would give it a nice bath and keep it clean after that. If you are not the only one using it, you may have a little extra clean up on Mondays (don't we all), but if it is nothing too excessive, just do it. Clean it yourself, and have the kids help to keep it clean.

I would have thrown the garbage in a bag and thrown everything else in a laundry basket and thrown that in the trunk. Then drive to the car wash and let them clean the interior and exterior. I drive my employers car and that is what I do. I make sure the kids take in whatever we bring out and I clean it out at the end of each day. But if they trash it that's what I do

OP, you sound very lazy. You are driving around the NANNY CAR that is full of trash and you refuse to clean it? Seriously? In my last two positions I have had a minivan that was the "nanny car" and I ALWAYS kept it clean. Every Friday, I brought the kids out with me and I would have them clean out all of their toys and put them in bins and I would clean up any wrappers, bottles or sippy cups that might have been left behind. I also took it through the car wash and vaccumed it out bi-weekly with the "nanny credit card".

You sound EXTREMELY lazy. You need to suck it up and clean out the van. It takes what? 30 minutes TOPS? Get off your high horse.

You drove a dirty van around for 3 months. Your MB had to TELL you to clean it out.

In the first place, you should have dealt with the messy vehicle before your MB had to manage the issue. I can't imagine having a car provided and then allowing it to remain dirty.

Second, you are supposed to be teaching your charges personal responsibility, right? The best way to do that is to lead by example. In your place, I would have been out cleaning the car with their help my 2nd week on the job.

+1 I'm an earlier poster who said its the nanny's job to keep the nanny car clean, and I am in fact a nanny. There's a lot of things you could argue is not a nanny's job, but cleaning after yourself and the kids in kid areas is most certainly your job.

If this is the car you use at work, for transporting kids, is it true you've used it for 3 months full of trash and gunk? That's gross.

Doesn't it bother you to drive in a dirty car? That is part of your workspace. I would have cleaned out that car the first week and then supervised the children in keeping it that way.

I would have cleaned it right away as I hate dirty cars. If you are the primary driver, it should be your "job" to keep it clean. Otherwise, drive your own car.

Quite frankly, you've got a LOT of gall, OP. You've been driving around for THREE MONTHS in a filthy minivan and shirking your duties by not keeping it clean. You belong on your knees thanking God above that you weren't fired.

And yes, if the children somehow let a food wrapper blow into the pool, it IS on your shoulders to fish it out.

Is the mess from when you were using the van? If so, I would have the kids help and get it done.

With my family, I make the kids clean up after themselves when I'm with them but when they are with their parents the car becomes a disaster area. I use the car during the week but I'm not cleaning up the mess they made over the weekend. Our agreement from the beginning is I'm expected to leave things the way they were when I arrived. They'd never make me clean out the car because they know I'm not the one who let it get like that.
