OP here again. It might not have been exactly 30 minutes, it may have just felt that long, I'm not entirely sure. However, I ended up coming clean to my MB and she was complete;y nice about it. She said that she understood and it was no big deal, and that she understood why I asked the child to lie.

If she had a phone, she should have been calling parents and police after no more than 5 minutes of looking. This is what is most disturbing if this is real -- clearly, OP is much more worried about her job than the child!

This!! I can not imagine losing a child for 30 minutes and not calling for some sort of help. I had my kids at a public place while their dad was looking for a table. I turned around and they were gone. I went to looked over to where my husband was and they were not there either. My heart sunk and I went looking for them. If I hadn't found them in a few minutes I would have everyone there looking with me and would have called the police.

The fact that after 10-15 minutes it didn't even cross your mind that someone could have taken him and you needed to call the police immediately blows my mind. What exact time frame would have made you consider that? Thank God that wasn't the case but if it had, that poor child would have been long gone. As a MB that alone would make me want to throw up.

I have NEVER lost a child for any amount of time and I've cared for a family of 7 AND don't have perfect vision. So unacceptable.

I am a parent + when my kids were young, I have lost them one time or so. {I am NOT saying this is common behavior, however it happens.}

Anyway, losing a kid for 30 min. is major OP.
Figure out what you did wrong so that he got away from you. Make 120% sure it NEVER EVER happens again!! In other words, chalk it up as a lesson learned big time.
Focus more and be more aware.

You could the honest thing, however it is almost a sure thing that if you disclose to your bosses what happened, expect to be unemployed right then and there.

I wouldn't tell my bosses and I would just keep my fingers crossed my 5yr old charge wouldn't either.

People may criticize me for not disclosing this, but like I said, honesty may not always be the best policy.
Like if you have bills that need to be paid and you do something that will most likely get your fired on the spot, why would you do such a thing?

Like I stated, simply take it as a lesson learned and make damn sure it never happens again.

Telling kids to lie to their parents is a bad idea, and makes them more vulnerable to abuse.

And what happens if you are out with the kids and something serious happens? The parents have to way to reach you.

Are you in the DC area OP? I might've seen you yesterday. If so, I'd be glad to contact the parents about this matter or even repost negligence. Does anyone know how I could go about doing this? I'd really hate to see those kids lying to their parents because their nanny said to.

The danger in telling a child they must lie to their parents about something that happened to them in order to protect someone else in their life is as great or greater than the danger that child was in during the 30 minutes he was lost in the park!
