No, you are confused. The nanny is the one who owes the taxes on their income. The IRS will go after an employer for their share, but nanny would be on the hook for all their own taxes. I know a nanny who owes the IRS over 10k right now.

If most nannies can hardly afford a room to rent, out of what money is she paying off 10K? How much per month over how many years?

I've always been paid legally. It's never been an issue with any of my employers. If the parents seem unsure of how to handle the taxes I suggest Breedlove or now it's called home pay.
