This is not something smart for a MB to do. Just to be clear. Might be good for the nanny but is a terrible idea for a MB who might find that special candidate early.

How short-sighted of you to think that way. My employer proposed the idea, much to benefit of all. Win-win. Ever hear of that?

Ummm....this isn't "smart". This is standard.

Apparently, not. We hear of employers who routinely fire the nanny, BEFORE said period of notice, leaving the poor nanny in a sudden financial predicament.

I can't think of a specific example, but my mb always treats me with respect, values my opinion, is always polite and quick to apologise if she were in the wrong, has a great sense of humour and curiosity about my culture, is a wonderful mother to her children and is an all around outstanding human being.

I also used to be an au-pair, and my then mb became one of my closest friends. We keep in touch almost ten years on, and the support she has given me over the years has been invaluable.

I've really been truly lucky to work with the loveliest people.

Your MB gives us hope. Thank you for sharing that.

OP here. No, this is definately not standard. Maybe you misread my post. I said that my MB asked that I give her as much notice as I possibly could. In return, she promised not to terminate me as soon as she found a replacement or whatever. So I gave her six weeks notice that I was going to move out of state. I didn't have to worry that she might not want me to work for the full six weeks that I wanted to work. In fact I haven't ever heard of another MB offering the nanny that kind of written guarantee. Has anyone else?

What do MBs think about this approach? From my MBs AND my perspective it was a definate win-win-win for all. Of course this arrangement required a high level of trust that my MB earned from me over the time that I worked with her child.

Read this thread in the hopes of finding something useful, rather than the "what's the stupidest thing your nanny did" thread to further the nastiness of this forum.
